Ohio Libraries Achieve New Heights in Resource Sharing

OhioLINK and SearchOhio Partnership Greatly Expands Access
to Materials for Mahoning County Library Patrons

YOUNGSTOWN (November 22, 2011 / For immediate release) – Patrons of the Public Library of Youngstown &  Mahoning County (PLYMC) now have access to over 75 million books and materials, as OhioLINK has been added to the already expansive offerings through SearchOhio available at PLYMC.

Thanks to the new collaborative program, SearchOhio—a network of 19 public library systems throughout the state, including the Mahoning County public library system—will provide library users with the ability to borrow academic materials from OhioLINK members.

The Ohio Library and Information Network, OhioLINK, is a consortium of 89 Ohio college and university libraries and the State Library of Ohio. OhioLink expands the offerings by over 61.9 million items (12.8 million titles).  The SearchOhio consortium of public libraries throughout the state offers 13.7 million items (1.9 million titles). PLYMC has over 265,000 titles (841,000 items).

Innovative Interfaces, whose Millennium catalog is used at PLYMC, reports, “The OhioLINK and SearchOhio consortia have launched a major new initiative that takes their already unprecedented levels of resource-sharing to new heights. The 109 public and academic libraries, representing a combined collection of over 60 million items, have implemented Innovative's new Peer-to-Peer Requesting to bridge their existing INN-Reach systems. Now, a patron from any library can freely request material from both systems.”

Carlton Sears, PLYMC Library Director, says, “Libraries in Ohio are known nationally for taking leadership in exploring new ways to enhance the services they provide to the citizens of the state. Patrons have come to expect these exceptional levels of service as normal. But what we see in the partnership of OhioLINK and SearchOhio is something that is truly noteworthy.  It’s a collaboration that gives Ohioans a level of access that’s not only simple to use, but truly unprecedented in scope.”

Users of OhioLINK's  libraries will benefit from access to millions of books, plus DVDs, and CDs, available through SearchOhio. "For us, it's a win-win situation," says John Magill, Executive Director of OhioLINK. "We're expanding the reach of OhioLINK's physical resources to a larger number of Ohio's citizens, while at the same time making it easier for our students to find the more popular titles found in a public library. And they'll still be able to pick up their books at their campus library."
