The United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley has partnered with the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County and the Brilex Group of Companies on an innovative pre-school learning tool. A school year calendar featuring educational tips and topics is provided to the 600 students and their families participating in the United Way’s Success By 6 program.
“The Library’s partnership with the Success By 6 calendar allows us to provide another way to reinforce the work we already do in our Baby Brilliant and children’s programming,” said Heidi M. Daniel, Library Director. “Because we believe strongly in the importance of a good foundation for reading, we also share early literacy techniques with family member and caregivers, giving them to tools to work with their little ones. The activities in the Success By 6 calendar are important in enhancing the reading experience for children in our community. For all these reasons and more, we are pleased to partner with United Way in this valuable effort.”
“We cannot give parents and caregivers more time, but we can help increase their knowledge and skills by providing specific information about ways to help children get off to a good start with the new school year,” said Kathy Mock, United Way Director of Education Initiatives. “The calendar helps turn everyday moments into learning moments.” By using the calendar as a guide, parents become partners by supporting the work performed by a child’s teacher.
United Way believes the best way to prepare children for success is to begin early. The Success By 6 Early Childhood Summer program focuses on children’s health, early literacy, and a pre-Kindergarten summer intervention and readiness program. It enables a child to be Ready, Set, and Grow for the new school year!
“The Library is committed to helping children enter school ready to learn, and we are thrilled to be a partner with United Way in this worthwhile effort,” noted Josephine Nolfi, Library Manager of Programming and Youth Services. “This calendar will help families make every day a learning experience. Along with the calendar appearing on our website, our customers can also pick up a copy of monthly events in our libraries.
”“We are proud to support the United Way’s and the Library’s Success By 6 Calendar which gives parents and/or caregivers the tools to enhance our children’s confidence by providing activities which helps them become problem solvers and lifelong learners. By starting early, these foundational skills allow children to build on their learning and knowledge throughout their entire life. This calendar is an excellent tool to guide caregivers in building this foundation for lifelong, educational success.” - Alex and Brian Benyo, Co-Owners, The Brilex Group of Companies.
There is no other medium in our community which presents early learning in this format. The Ready, Set, Grow! calendar is available for download at www.ymvunitedway.org and by clicking here.
