Hello, Mahoning County neighbors!
As you may already know, 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the United States of America – an event known as the Semiquincentennial (there’s a Jeopardy word for you!). To commemorate this event, the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission was established in 2016 by an act of Congress. This nonpartisan Commission is working to engage Americans across the country in an inclusive celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence of the United States, which will culminate on July 4th, 2026.
All 50 states and US territories are participating in America250, and each one has formed its own America250 entity to plan for the anniversary. The Ohio Commission for the U.S. Semiquincentennial, or America 250-Ohio, was announced on March 1, 2022, and is charged with preparing the state to participate in the Semiquincentennial.
During the lead-up to 2026, Ohioans from our local communities in all 88 counties will be featured as representing the impact that Ohio has made and will continue to make on our nation's story. From the many "firsts" that came from Ohio (such as aviation, universities/colleges, national organizations, and so on), to the sacred stories of our residents, and the unique areas of the state that continue to evolve, the rich content of our state will be an opportunity for all people to connect and see themselves in Ohio's story...as well as the story of our nation.
The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will, of course, be an enthusiastic participant in this celebration, and will feature opportunities for you, our patrons and neighbors, to share YOUR Ohio/Mahoning/Youngstown story. From our incredible and influential past to our hopeful present and bright future, we hope to spotlight the talents, ingenuity, and success stories of our county and its people, and provide ways for you to weave yourself into Ohio’s, and America’s, rich tapestry.
