Don’t Cut Ohio Libraries

Ohio libraries need your help!

The Ohio House of Representatives introduced its version of the state budget, which includes cuts to funding for Ohio’s Public Libraries and eliminates the Public Library Fund (PLF) as it exists today.

The House's budget, Sub. HB 96:

  • Eliminates the requirement that a percentage of the state General Revenue Fund (GRF) be dedicated to the PLF.
  • Reduces state funding for Ohio’s public libraries by more than $100 million over the biennium as compared to the Governor’s proposal.
  • Creates a new distribution formula that would cut funding to public libraries in 39 counties on July 1.

How does this impact you?

At The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, funding from the PLF allows us to offer the materials, programs and services our community needs. This includes:

  • Access to books and media
  • Children and adult literacy programs like storytimes and book clubs
  • Business and workforce development resources
  • Special Delivery services, which provide library materials to our area's seniors and those who are homebound

How can you help?

Contact your representatives! Tell them to restore the PLF to the Governor’s proposed budget and share why you love your library.

Sample message:

"My name is _________ and I am a proud patron of The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and one of your constituents. I am contacting your office today to voice my opposition to proposed cuts to the Public Library Fund. This drastic reduction of resources to my library and libraries across our state will rob all Ohioans of treasured and often vital programs and services that contribute to a thriving community."
