To boldly go where no telescope has gone before…

It’s been an exciting year for us Earthlings to look up in the night sky. Starting with a Total Lunar Eclipse on May 15, 2022, which also happened to be a Supermoon, when the moon is closer to the Earth and therefore looks larger in the sky. On June 24, 2022, a rare 5-planet alignment of Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn could be seen from Earth. Such an occurrence will not happen again until 2040.

On July 12, 2022, The James Webb Space Telescope captured images of deep space in infrared from 2,500 light years to 13.6 billion light years away. The images capture the forming of a new star, a planet with a “water signature” similar to Earth’s, and even a quintet of galaxies! And just a day later on July 13, 2022, the night was lit up with a Super Buck Moon (also known as the July full moon), which was the biggest and brightest full moon of the year!
