Statement from Erin Phemester, PLYMC Chief Experience Officer:
“It is disheartening to learn that staff at the Institute of Museum and Library Services were placed on administrative leave. This apparent lack of value placed on library services at the federal level will impact communities across our country. While our library system has been fortunate to receive over $85,000 in grants since 2019 to support early literacy and STEM learning opportunities that are now at risk, PLYMC is supported by the Public Library Fund (PLF) in Ohio providing 47% of our annual revenue. Since 2008, Ohio has committed to supporting the vital services that libraries provide – access to information, workforce development resources, early literacy programs, tax assistance, STEM learning opportunities, and much more. Our top priority remains the PLF so that we can continue to provide welcoming spaces, educational programs, and exceptional library services.”
The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County would like area legislators to support an increase in the PLF from 1.7% to 2% of the General Revenue Fund (GRF) to account for inflation and the steady decline in revenue the PLF has generated over the last couple of decades.
